Internal Conflicts and Defections Challenge Congress Ahead of 2024 Elections

As the 2024 Lok Sabha elections draw near, the Congress party, leading a coalition of 15 opposition parties, faces significant internal challenges and defections. While striving to unite against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress has experienced setbacks, notably the BJP's successful inroads into its stronghold.

The Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC), under the leadership of Bhupen Bora, is making concerted efforts to connect with diverse voter groups, including tea workers, slum dwellers, and tribal communities, through various outreach programs. Despite these initiatives, the party grapples with internal discord and the departure of key members, raising questions about its stability.

One notable defection is that of Suresh Bora to the BJP, a move surrounded by rumors and speculation. Discussions are rife about whether his decision was a result of internal conflicts within Congress, specifically with Rakibul Hussain, or an alignment with the BJP's strategic objectives.

Further complicating matters, the BJP's targeting of the Tea Workers' Union, traditionally aligned with Congress, signifies a strategic shift in state politics. This is exemplified by several union leaders donning the BJP's symbolic yellow hats. Additionally, the Youth Congress Vice President, Paritosh Roy, has also switched allegiance to the BJP, a move that has raised eyebrows given his previous close association with former minister Rakibul Hussain.

Amidst these developments, the Congress faces the pressing question of which other influential members might follow suit, as it struggles to maintain its influence and unity in the face of growing challenges from the BJP. The political landscape in the state, therefore, remains dynamic and uncertain as parties vie for dominance.
