GUWAHATI: In a recent announcement, Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shed light on the state's declining crime rates, presenting a hopeful picture of improved law and order. Addressing the public via X (formerly Twitter), he revealed that the first eight months of 2023 witnessed around 1,400 cases of murder, rape, and dacoity combined, marking a noticeable decrease in major crimes.
"Our commitment to making Assam a crime-free state is making positive strides in the right direction," Sarma asserted on X, showcasing his administration's dedication to enhancing safety and security in the region. The chief minister, who also holds the Home portfolio, provided a comparative analysis of crime data over the last five years, illustrating a clear “declining trend” in such incidents.
From January to August 2023, the state recorded 686 murder cases, 656 rape incidents, and 55 dacoity cases. The chief minister attributed this decrease to a range of factors including intensified police patrolling, upgraded efficiency in crime management, strategic use of forensic evidence, and strengthened coordination between the public and the police forces. He also highlighted the unwavering support and commitment from the state government in this crucial area.
Providing a broader perspective, Sarma pointed out that in 2022, Assam experienced 2,282 cases of murder, rape, and dacoity. This presents a stark contrast to the 3,302 cases reported in 2021, 3,065 in 2020, and 3,385 in 2019. The data reflects the state's consistent and dedicated efforts towards curbing crime and ensuring the safety of its citizens.
Responding to the chief minister’s post, Assam’s Director-General of Police (DGP) Gyanendra Pratap Singh expressed his commitment to the cause, stating, “Sir, @assampolice shall make all efforts to fulfill your commitment to the people of Assam. Warm regards." This response reinforces the police department’s resolve to continue their hard work in maintaining law and order and providing a secure environment for the people of Assam.
As the state moves forward, the substantial decrease in major crimes is a testament to the effectiveness of the proactive measures implemented by the government and the police force. It is a positive sign that Assam is on the right path towards becoming a safer and more secure state, aligning with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's vision of a crime-free Assam.
