You may remember this day, i.e December 2, when the gas tragedy that occurred in Bhopal is one of the deadliest industrial pollution catastrophes in history. The leak of poisonous methyl isocyanate gas killed 2,259 people instantly and injured more than 500,000 others. This day is celebrated on December 2 every year to commemorate those who lost their lives in the gas accident and to raise public awareness about what pollution can do and why we should be careful.
There are many government and non-government organizations across the country celebrating this day with various programmes on the theme “Sustainable Development for a Clean and Healthy Planet.” The theme is trying to make people aware and active The event is also celebrated by the National Pollution Control Board with a series of programs throughout the day with the aim of creating public awareness .
The program started at 8 a.m. with the planting of trees by the students and an awareness parade in Baghara in Morigaon district of Central Assam.Afterwards, a seminar on “Significance of National Pollution Control Day” was held at Jakhinikhal Primary School near Baghara in Morigaon district. The seminar was conducted by prominent social worker Krishnakanta Deka and the chief speakers were Hitesh Sharma and Prasad Deuri, Presidents of Nature Loving Forum,Assam . The meeting was chaired by Iren Deka, Assistant Secretary of the Forum. In addition to these activities, the activists of Nature Loving Forum in Assam also cleaned up plastic waste and installed dustbins at Jakhinikhal Primary School and Charan Beel banks, as well as other places in Morigaon district. The forum called on all citizens to pay more attention to controlling air, soil and water pollution .
