Speculations Abound Over Next Chief Secretary of Assam After Paban Barthakur

After the retirement of Chief Secretary Paban Barthakur on December 31, 2023, there is widespread speculation about who will occupy the highest bureaucratic chair in Assam. Many IAS officers have been discussed and listed in Delhi, and according to reliable sources, Pawan Barthakur is likely to be reappointed as the Chief Secretary of the Government of Assam.

While there may be some bureaucrats who are dissatisfied with Pawan Barthakur's tenure, they are reluctant to openly express their complaints to Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sharma. On the other hand, there are several officers in Janata Bhavan who are interested in having Pawan Barthakur return as Chief Secretary due to his reputation as a clean and efficient administrator, which they believe would be in the best interest of Assam and the Assamese people.
