The Assam government has a big plan to improve rural roads. They want to make about 1,000 km of these roads as good as the national highways. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma asked the Public Works Department (PWD) to pick which roads to fix.
They're talking with NABARD, a big bank, to get money for this project. Some time ago, the government had started fixing roads under the Asom Mala Scheme. They made some roads better, and some are still being worked on. One road, Palasbari-Chandubi in Kamrup district, is already done. The construction of this road had made easier for the people to visit Chandubi.
Now, they want to start phase II of the Asom Mala Scheme. The goal is to connect important rural areas with better roads. They think it will cost about Rs 3,500 crore to improve 1,000 km of roads. The PWD is now looking for a company to help plan this big project.
