In Guwahati, the Central Police District, part of the Guwahati Police Commissionerate, has issued a strict order banning the use of firecrackers near several key areas. This ban includes places close to the Guwahati Refinery, the Oil India Pumping Station, and where Oil pipelines run through the Central Police District. The reason for this ban is due to the high risk of fire. These areas contain large amounts of petroleum products, which are very flammable and can easily catch fire.
To prevent any fire incidents and to protect the safety of people living nearby, Amitabh Basumatary, the Deputy Commissioner of Police for the Central Police District, has made it clear that no one should burst firecrackers within a 500-meter radius of the Guwahati Refinery in Noonmati, the Oil India Pumping Station in Satgaon, and along the Oil Pipelines within the Central Guwahati Police District.
The order also extends to the Silence Zones of Central Guwahati Police District, prohibiting the use of any fireworks and crackers. This new rule is effective immediately. If someone does not follow this order, they can be punished under section 188 of the Indian Penal Code.
Earlier, at a press conference in Guwahati, the Commissioner of Police, Diganta Barah, asked the residents to enjoy Diwali and Kali Puja celebrations while strictly following the guidelines provided by the authorities. Barah warned that anyone not obeying the rules would face serious consequences. He was hopeful about the festive spirit but stressed the importance of adhering to guidelines set by the Supreme Court and Kamrup district administration. Barah especially mentioned the ban on crackers that contain barium nitrate, allowing only the use of environmentally friendly green crackers as defined by the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI).
