Opposition in Assam Accuses BJP of Using CBI and ED to Target Political Rivals

The United Opposition Forum in Assam, representing 15 political parties, has made serious allegations against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), claiming that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) are being misused to pursue leaders from opposition parties. They state that in the last four years, 95% of the cases by these agencies have targeted opposition figures, with no cases against BJP leaders, contrary to the scenario during the previous UPA tenure.

In a charged press conference, Assam's Trinamool Congress leader Ripun Bora, backed by the United Opposition Forum, alleged a systematic use of federal investigative agencies by the BJP to control political opposition. According to the Forum, a total of 129 cases have been registered against opposition leaders in the last four years, with the highest number against Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Congress party leaders. They contrasted this with the period of 2014-2023, during which they claim no BJP leader was the subject of CBI or ED investigation, and ongoing cases against BJP members have remained pending.

Bora further claimed that the BJP has “cleansed” its leaders who had previous allegations against them and pointed to the interrogation, arrest, or raids of 56 opposition leaders including prominent figures like Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Arvind Kejriwal.

The timing of summons and investigations has also been questioned by the Forum, which suggests a pattern of disrupting opposition political activities. They highlighted instances where leaders were called for questioning during critical political engagements, implying an intention to detract them from political campaigns and activities.

Bora criticized the government's inaction on repatriating major economic offenders and addressed the recent incident involving TMC MP Mahua Moitra, calling it a “shameful act” and a violation of personal liberty, as she was allegedly humiliated during a Lok Sabha Ethics Committee’s hearing.

This story, published without modification from a syndicated feed, presents an ongoing tension between the BJP and opposition parties, reflecting the politicization of federal investigative agencies as a point of contention in Indian politics
