Witness an extraordinary blend of time and social commentary as the Design School showcases a captivating collection of clocks, transformed into profound statements on pressing social issues. This one-day event, happening on Wednesday, Nov. 1, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., is set to leave a lasting impact on all who attend.
Each of the 12-inch clocks featured in the exhibit goes beyond its conventional role of time-telling, serving instead as a dynamic medium for conveying complex social narratives. This collection forms the centerpiece of a capstone project by undergraduates from the Visual Communication Design program, demonstrating how graphic design can transcend visual aesthetics to communicate deeper, more significant messages.
Senior student Abigail Bowser shares her journey, "It's very rewarding...to simply make a clock about a social issue... and be able to execute it very well." Her clock delves into the psychological harm inflicted by conspiracy theories, illustrating the power of design in tackling intricate topics.
From exploring the harrowing realities of school shootings and child-related gun violence, as showcased by Isabela Glass’s clock on the Columbine High School incident, to Delaney Gerasta’s poignant depiction of palliative care, each timepiece tells a unique story, grounded in extensive research and a profound connection to societal challenges.
Anna Belding’s clock encapsulates the underreporting of police-caused deaths of American civilians in one powerful word: "systemic." While Isabelle Clem turns her focus to the disparities in public transportation access, highlighting the plight of low-income communities and communities of color in Atlanta.
Leveraging the resources available at the Novus Innovation Corridor, including the Makerspace laser cutter, students have skillfully brought their visions to life using materials ranging from bullet casings to acrylic.
Don't miss this opportunity to immerse yourself in a world where time stands still, and social awareness takes center stage. And for those inspired to take home a piece of this impactful exhibit, the clocks will be auctioned off at the Visual Communication Design Poster Show on Nov. 9, contributing to the grand finale of the senior design exhibition in the Spring.
Embrace the chance to experience design in its most powerful form, as these students prove that when it comes to change, it's always the right time.
