Assam Government Takes Measures to Combat Misinformation with Social Media Research Team

G

GUWAHATI: The Assam government has taken proactive steps to address the proliferation of potentially harmful and misleading information on social media platforms by establishing a Social Media Research Team (SMRT) under the Directorate of Information and Public Relations. This team is dedicated to monitoring and countering false and malicious comments related to government policies and initiatives across various social media channels.

To streamline and coordinate these efforts, each government department has been requested to nominate a nodal officer. This strategic approach is designed to prevent the polarization of public opinion and safeguard the reputation and integrity of government departments against the spread of misinformation.

The primary objective of the SMRT is to proactively identify propaganda, misinformation, fake news, and other harmful content on social media platforms. Upon detection, the team will promptly notify the relevant authorities with concise details of the content, enabling immediate corrective actions or the issuance of rebuttals.

This move by the Assam government underscores its commitment to ensuring that accurate and reliable information reaches the public, countering the potential negative impacts of false narratives and rumors on social media. It also reflects the government's dedication to transparency and accountability in its communication with the citizens of Assam.
