Tinsukia: A tragic incident unfolded in Assam's Tinsukia district, where a 55-year-old imam, identified as Maulana Tehzeeb Islam, was stabbed to death during morning prayers at a mosque. The accused, a 42-year-old man named Mohammad Ibrahim Ahmed, was promptly arrested.
According to the police, Ahmed entered the mosque during the early morning prayers brandishing a machete and proceeded to stab the imam multiple times. Tragically, Maulana Tehzeeb Islam lost his life at the scene, while the assailant attempted to flee. However, he left behind the murder weapon, changed his bloodstained clothes, and returned to the scene to pose as an onlooker, at which point he was identified and detained.
A case has been registered against the accused under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Reports suggest that the victim and the assailant had a verbal altercation a few days prior, during which Ahmed had allegedly threatened to kill the imam. Although the imam was urged to report the threats to the police, he had reportedly expressed faith that "Allah would protect" him.
While Ahmed has confessed to the crime, police investigations are ongoing, with personal grudges suspected as the motive behind the murder.
