Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently visited Mathura for a special event, the 'Mirabai Janmotsav.' This event celebrated the 525th birthday of Mirabai, a famous devotee of Lord Krishna from medieval times. Modi released a stamp in her honor, joined by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, UP Governor Anandiben Patel, and Mathura MP Hema Malini.
He talked about the connection between Uttar Pradesh (UP) and Rajasthan through the Braj region, where Mathura is a key place. This area is known for its devotion to Krishna and its history of religious poetry, especially by Mirabai.
Modi also mentioned the link between this region and Gujarat, where Krishna established the city of Dwarka and where Mirabai spent her later years. He referred to the importance of Mathura in Hinduism, comparing it to other holy cities like Varanasi and Ayodhya, suggesting that Mathura, Krishna's birthplace, should also be recognized for its religious significance.
The event happened just before elections in nearby Rajasthan. In this region, the BJP and Congress parties are competing for votes, including from communities like the Jats and Yadavs, who are known to be devotees of Krishna. Mirabai, who is highly respected in Rajasthan, was from a royal family there.
A BJP spokesperson said that Modi's visit was for the religious event, not for politics, as there are no elections in UP and the event was to honor Mirabai, a well-known saint devoted to Krishna.
