GMC Launches Helpline for Responsible Disposal of Banana Trees After Diwali

GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has taken a proactive step to encourage responsible waste management and cleanliness in the city by addressing the disposal of banana trees used during Diwali festivities.

Banana trees are commonly utilized for decorations during Diwali celebrations but often become litter on the streets once the festivities conclude. In a bid to maintain the city's cleanliness, GMC is appealing to shopkeepers, puja pandal committees, and citizens to refrain from discarding these trees on the streets.

Instead, the GMC is urging the public to cooperate in keeping the city clean by safely disposing of these trees in GMC garbage vans. To facilitate this process, the GMC has launched a dedicated helpline number, 8811007000. Citizens can call this helpline to request the collection and proper disposal of the banana trees. The municipal corporation has assured that all trees collected will be recycled and disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner.

The GMC shared its message on their official platform, stating, "Don't toss the banana trees on the streets. Call GMC on our helpline number, and we'll pick them up! Whether they're unsold or used, we'll ensure proper disposal. Let's light up the city without littering it. Together, we can make a difference!"

In addition to this initiative, Diganta Barah, the Guwahati Commissioner of Police, has appealed to the people of Guwahati to celebrate Diwali and Kali Puja with enthusiasm while adhering to the rules and guidelines set by the administration. Barah emphasized that strict actions will be taken against those found disobeying the regulations put in place for the upcoming festivals.

It's worth noting that the Kamrup Metro district has imposed a complete ban on the use of sound-emitting firecrackers between 10 pm and 8 am. Furthermore, the manufacturing, sale, and use of firecrackers generating noise levels exceeding 125 dB (A) or 145 dB (C) peak at a distance of 4 meters from the point of bursting have been prohibited. This holistic approach aims to ensure a cleaner and quieter festive season in Guwahati.
