November 30: The Sanskritik Mahasabha of Assam, has awarded the title of "Jansevak Ratna" to Devashish Sharma the District Commissioner of Morigaon, in recognition of his long-time service to cancer patients in the state. The award was conferred during a meeting held at the Pobitorahat conference hall. Pabitra Kumar Sharma, President of the Sanskritik Mahasabha, Assam, chaired the event.
During his inaugural address, Balendra Kumar Das, Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya, praised Devashish Sharma for his services during the pandemic. He highlighted how Sharma's actions reflected the essence of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika's song "Manuhe Manuhar babe Jadihe Akano Nabhabe." Das commended Sharma's efforts, including his role as the Joint Resident Commissioner of Assam Bhavan in Mumbai, where he organized the safe return of 168 passengers, including 80 cancer patients, from Mumbai to Assam.
Thaneswar Malakar, a retired Commissioner Secretary of the Government of Assam and a writer, spoke as the chief guest and lauded Devashish Sharma's dedication to cancer patients. Malakar shared his experience of witnessing Sharma's tireless efforts to care for patients during his time in Mumbai. He praised Sharma as a source of inspiration for the younger generation and suggested that he deserved the Padma Shri award.
Pratap Hazarika, President of the Assam Sanskritik Mahasabha Morigaon District Committee, recognized Devashish Sharma's contributions to Morigaon's development by promoting an alternative economy despite challenges. Superintendent of Police Hemanta Kumar Das also expressed his appreciation for having a District Commissioner like Devashish Sharma.
Devashish Sharma accepted the award and dedicated it to his father, emphasizing the importance of humility and selflessness. The event featured the lighting of lanterns and Bargeet by members of the Lekhika Samarooh Samiti, Morigaon. Prominent personalities from various fields attended the event, and many expressed hope that Devashish Sharma would one day receive the Padma Shri Award.
The award ceremony was attended by officials from various institutions, district administration officials, and local residents.
