Guru Nanak Jayanti, also known as Gurupurab, is a very special day for Sikhs. It celebrates the birthday of Guru Nanak Dev, who started the Sikh religion. This festival is very important and many people look forward to it. In 2023, it will be celebrated on November 27.
On Gurupurab, the celebrations start early in the morning with something called 'prabhat pheris'. These are morning walks where people go around singing religious songs. These walks start from Sikh temples, called 'gurudwaras'. A group known as 'panj pyaras' leads these walks. They carry a special Sikh flag and a palanquin with the Guru Granth Sahib.
Before the big day, there is a 48-hour reading of the Guru Granth Sahib at gurudwaras. This reading doesn't stop and goes on day and night. Guru Nanak Dev taught three important things: remembering God, working hard, and sharing with others. Gurupurab is a day to remember these teachings and celebrate with joy and devotion.
