First Group of Israeli Captives Given to Red Cross

The recent news about Israel and Hamas involves the release of hostages in a deal. The first group, including 13 Israelis who are mothers and children, were handed over to the Red Cross. They were taken from Khan Younis in Gaza to the Rafah crossing into Israel. This release is just the start, as Hamas has agreed to free around 50 hostages over four days. These hostages have been with Hamas since their attack on Israel on October 7.

The deal also says that Hamas might free more hostages if the ceasefire is extended. For now, Israel will release 150 Palestinian prisoners, focusing on women and minors. This is in return for the 50 Israelis. Out of these, 39 prisoners will be exchanged for the first 13 Israelis.

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Yoav Gallant are keeping a close watch on this operation. They are at the IDF Operations Branch control center in Tel Aviv for this.

In a separate but related event, Egypt helped get 12 Thai hostages released, who were also taken during the October 7 attack. Thailand's Prime Minister confirmed their release. Meanwhile, the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, set up by Qatar, started at 7 am local time. This is a big step in the conflict and brings hope for the safe return of those captured.
