I India

In a proud moment for Assam and India, Urmimala Barua, founder of UMB Pageants, was honored with the prestigious Nelson Mandela Leadership Award and invited as a keynote speaker at Oxford University, United Kingdom. Representing her roots on an international stage, Barua delivered an inspiring address on redefining beauty standards, female empowerment, and resilience.

Carrying Heritage to the Global Stage

Dressed in a traditional Assamese Mekhela Chador designed by Momi Bora, Barua brought a piece of her cultural heritage to the global event. Addressing the audience at Oxford University, she shared her journey from a small town in Assam to establishing UMB Pageants—a platform created to celebrate women regardless of age, size, marital status, or background.

"Beauty is not defined by height, size, marital status, age, or color. Beauty is the confidence we carry, the battles we overcome, and the stories of resilience we choose to tell," Barua said during her keynote speech. "No matter how far our dreams take us, we should never forget where we come from."

 A Movement for Inclusivity

Under her initiative, UMB Pageants operates not merely as a traditional pageant, but as an inclusive movement aimed at breaking conventional societal norms and empowering women from all walks of life to discover their strength.

Barua expressed deep gratitude for the recognition, hoping her journey inspires women—especially those from rural communities and small towns—to pursue their ambitions boldly regardless of their beginnings.

 Cultural Heritage and Global Recognition

Highlighting the significance of the accomplishment, the Pranta Prasar Pramukh of Sanskar Bharati, Uttar Asom Pranta, sailendra Pandey noted that this achievement serves as a showcase of Assam’s rich culture and history to the world. He emphasized that Assam holds a deep legacy famed for its cultural wealth and heritage, and after a period of gap, the younger generation is actively reviving and projecting Assamese culture onto the international stage.

He described the occasion not merely as women's empowerment, but as a dedicated contribution to the motherland. Calling Urmimala Barua an inspiration for every Assamese youth, he added that her journey demonstrates how the people of Assam can contribute meaningfully to both the state and nation, bringing Assam's heritage to the global forefront.

Continuing a Legacy of Cultural Pride

The event adds to a growing narrative of Assamese icons gaining global recognition while uplifting their community's rich cultural heritage. By combining traditional attire with global advocacy, Barua’s achievement stands as a powerful testament to the potential, resilience, and expanding influence of Assam on the world stage.
