In an important move, the Delhi government has announced a change in the school calendar due to the serious air pollution in the city. The winter vacation, which is normally in December, will now begin earlier, from November 9 to November 18. This decision has been made to keep the students away from the harmful effects of the polluted air.
On Monday, Delhi's Environment Minister, Gopal Rai, confirmed that schools will temporarily close because the pollution has reached worrying levels, which could be dangerous to people's health. The government has decided to change the holiday dates so that students' studies are not badly affected by the closures.
The air quality in Delhi is getting worse. On Wednesday, the air quality index (AQI) showed that pollution in Delhi is at a 'severe' level, with a score of 421 early in the morning. This is a big drop from the day before when the air was rated as 'very poor'. High AQI numbers like 452 in Anand Vihar and 460 in Punjabi Bagh were reported. These numbers show that the pollution is very bad and something needs to be done quickly to make the air safer, especially for children.
With this early winter break, the Delhi government aims to look after the health of the students while also trying to make sure their education doesn't suffer too much. They are putting the safety of the young people first during this difficult time of pollution. The situation is a reminder that Delhi needs a strong plan to deal with air pollution for the health of all its people.
