Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said at a rally that if the BJP wins in Telangana, they will change Hyderabad's name to Bhagyanagar. G Kishan Reddy, the BJP leader in Telangana, also said the same thing. He mentioned that many Indian cities have had their names changed, like Madras to Chennai, Calcutta to Kolkata, Bombay to Mumbai, and Rajpath to Kartavya Path.

Reddy said that Bhagyanagar was Hyderabad's old name before the Nizam rule, and they want to bring that name back.  This announcement comes after Adityanath said during a rally in Hyderabad that the BJP would celebrate September 17 as a special day and create Bhagyanagar when they come to power. This is the second time he has talked about changing Hyderabad's name, the first time being during the 2020 Hyderabad civic polls.

In Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath's government has already renamed some cities, like Allahabad to Prayagraj and Faizabad to Ayodhya. They also have plans to rename other cities like Aligarh, Mainpuri, Firozabad, and Mirzapur.
