Guwahati, Assam: The United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I), a banned militant organization, has issued a statement directly challenging Assam Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh. The group has urged him to focus on instilling transparency within his department rather than scrutinizing the activities of ULFA-I.
Background:
The statement from ULFA-I comes after two individuals, Deep Asom and Pranab Asom, initially escaped from the group's camp but were subsequently detained and killed by ULFA-I members. The group acknowledged this incident and asserted that necessary actions have been taken against the cadres responsible, in accordance with their internal laws and Code of Conduct.
Statement from ULFA-I:
In their press release, ULFA-I questioned the DGP’s effectiveness in addressing issues within his department, highlighting a range of concerns including fake encounters, sexual assaults by police, physical assaults, black money seizures, fake gold and drug seizures, and extortion by police. They emphasized that while such incidents are rare within their ranks, they always ensure justice is served.
Criticisms and Accusations:
ULFA-I criticized the DGP’s use of the term ‘indigenous,’ equating it to ‘crocodile tears’ and implying insincerity. They also held him responsible for the death of six innocent youths during the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) and anti-CAA movements. Furthermore, they questioned why justice has not been provided to the family of deceased Sub-Inspector Junmoni Rabha.
Conclusion:
The statement from ULFA-I highlights the ongoing tension between the militant group and state authorities in Assam. It reflects the group’s attempt to deflect criticism and scrutiny by turning the spotlight on the Assam Police and its leadership. This development underscores the complexities of the security situation in Assam and the challenges faced by law enforcement in dealing with militant groups and ensuring transparency and accountability within their ranks.
