Morigaon, November 9: Acting on intelligence input, a successful operation led by Simanta Deka, Forest Ranger I of Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, resulted in the apprehension of one suspect, Nur Islam alias Dulal, aged 35, son of Meher Ali from Sidhaguri, PO Burgaon, PS Mayong. The operation took place at Hatibhangi, just outside the protected area (PA), where the accused was caught in the act of setting up nets to trap various birds, including migratory species.
During the operation, two common snipes, categorized under Schedule II Part B of the Wildlife Protection Act 1972, were found ensnared in the nets. Unfortunately, one of the snipers was discovered dead. This illegal practice is frequently employed by a group of miscreants near the Brahmaputra area, specifically targeting migratory birds and selling their meat in the market.
Authorities have seized four long fishing nets and one mobile phone from the accused. Nur Islam was arrested today under specific sections of the Wildlife Protection Act 1972. However, another accomplice managed to escape from the site, prompting ongoing search operations.
The incident sends a stern message to those involved in such heinous crimes that stringent action will be taken against them. These activities pose a significant threat to the beautiful winter visitors en route to Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary and the surrounding wetland areas of Morigaon. Wildlife protection remains a top priority, and poaching will not be tolerated.
