The casualty figure in Nepal has escalated to 128 following a potent earthquake of 6.4 magnitude that occurred on Friday night, as per a statement from Reuters. Over 140 individuals have been reported injured across the districts of Jajarkot and Rukum in the western part of Nepal, with the state broadcaster Nepal Television confirming the numbers.
Officials from the National Earthquake Monitoring Centre pinpointed the earthquake’s epicentre near Lamidanda in the district of Jajarkot. In response to the disaster, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his condolences for the lives lost due to the earthquake in a message on his official social media account. He wrote, "The news of lives lost and destruction caused by the earthquake in Nepal is deeply upsetting. India stands united with the Nepalese populace and is ready to provide all necessary support. Our hearts go out to the families in mourning and we hope for a swift recovery of those injured."
The Nepalese Prime Minister's office, led by Pushpa Kamal Dahal, has reported that all security forces have been deployed promptly for rescue and relief operations for those affected by the earthquake. On Saturday, Prime Minister Dahal ‘Prachanda’ assessed the impacted regions firsthand.
The Home Ministry of Nepal has indicated that there are additional reports of harm to individuals and property emerging from other regions, including Dailekh, Salyan, and Rolpa districts. The injured have been receiving medical attention at a local hospital in Jajarkot, situated approximately 500 kilometres to the west of the capital, Kathmandu.
