The Assam State Zoo cum Botanical Garden—celebrated globally as the "Green Lung" of Guwahati city and a rare ecological sanctuary nestled within the heart of an Asian metropolis—has achieved another remarkable milestone in ex-situ wildlife conservation.
The zoo family welcomed ‘Gagan’, a healthy baby giraffe born on August 16 to mother Bijaya and father Bijay. Marking their second offspring together, Gagan’s arrival expands the giraffe clan into a vibrant four-member family, showcasing the high standards of animal welfare and breeding care upheld by state conservation authorities.
Chief Minister's Message & Conservation Vision
Sharing the news with citizens, Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted the significance of the newborn:
- The sight of little Gagan growing healthily fills our hearts with immense joy. This four-member giraffe family is a living testament to our state zoo’s unwavering commitment to animal welfare, conservation, and compassionate care. Guwahati continues to demonstrate to the world how urban growth and rich biodiversity can thrive side by side.
An Appeal from Zoo Authorities
Echoing Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma's vision, the zoo management team, under the guidance of the Chief Minister, extended an open invitation to nature lovers and the public:
- We warmly welcome citizens, families, and wildlife enthusiasts to visit the Assam State Zoo cum Botanical Garden and meet our newest family member, Gagan. Being one of the few urban reserve-forest zoos in Asia, our ongoing mission is to protect our natural flora and fauna while fostering ecological awareness across generations.
A Global Blueprint for Urban Wildlife Conservation
Located inside the lush Hengrabari Reserve Forest, the Assam State Zoo stands out as an exceptional ecological treasure under the dedicated leadership of Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma. While urbanization rapidly transforms cities across Asia, Guwahati proves that a city can keep greenness in its heart and wildlife at its core. Gagan’s successful birth serves as a powerful message to the world: with dedicated care and conservation, human habitations and wild species can flourish in harmony.
